In the Midst…

It’s messy in the middle.

Toys strewn, boxes scattered of

their innards, doors opening

then easing shut.

I take a breath, letting it out

slowly.

I look down at my

ever expanding middle –

watching the tiny shark fin

track its way

beneath the surface.

I take a breath, letting it out

expectantly.

Conversations stop in the

middle.

Trails of thought skip and leap,

caught between desires

at the same time.

I take a breath, letting it out

wistfully.

Perhaps this perpetual motion

finds us at our most real –

whispering of the secret

buried in plain sight.

For even our beginnings were

first revealed

in the sharp inhalation

of delight.

This post is part of the Five Minute Friday writing challenge. Each Friday I join with this talented group of writers, free writing for five minutes in accordance with a prompt. Today’s prompt is ‘middle’.

  1. Emma,
oh your words are beautiful! And, so appropriate for a busy mom of two with a third one increasingly vying for attention, even from within! 🙂 Congratulations on this expanding family, and for capturing such beauty in a brief writing. You really spoke with depth.

  2. Emma,

I looked forward to reading your post this week. Your poetry is so beautiful and I am awed that your mind flows such eloquence in 5 minutes. Truly a gift! As usual, this post encompasses the prompt perfectly. Congratulations on your expanding middle!

    1. Sometimes I find it quicker to write poetry because it seems to tap into the part of my brain that doesn’t overthink things as much! :p Appreciate you stopping by! xx
